Hydraulic System Maintenance Best Practices

Proper hydraulic system maintenance is critical to oilfield safety and uptime. Follow these best practices to extend equipment life and prevent costly failures in the field.

Hydraulic systems power everything from blowout preventers to top drives and drawworks. Preventive maintenance of these systems is a critical safety and operational imperative for every drilling program.

Daily Inspection Checklist

Perform daily visual inspections covering fluid level and color, hose and fitting conditions, accumulator pre-charge pressure, and any evidence of leaks or unusual noise from pumps and motors. Early detection of minor issues prevents catastrophic failures.

Fluid Analysis and Change Intervals

Hydraulic fluid should be sampled and analyzed quarterly. Contamination by water, particulates, or oxidation byproducts degrades system performance. In high-temperature offshore environments, shorten change intervals to every 1,500 operating hours.

BOP Accumulator Testing

BOP accumulators must be tested weekly to verify that stored energy is sufficient to operate all BOP functions at least 1.5 times without pump assist. Document all tests in the well control log.
